Often when we travel within Australia we take our small dog with us. This necessitates advance planning in terms of accommodation and severely restricts where we can stay.

The upside, when it comes to Sydney, is that rather than staying in small hotel rooms in the inner city we generally end up in much more spacious apartment style digs, invariably self catering and with a small courtyard. This comes at around the same price as, or less than, a basic viewless inner city hotel room, especially when you add the outrageous cost city centre hotels charge for car parking.

So it was that we ended up in the Darling Street Apartments in the surburb of Rozelle – about 5 minutes drive from the city centre, though I recommend you do not drive in the city (more below).

The quiet and secluded apartments – two of them, one called the Artist’s Studio and the other called the Writer’s Den – are a small part of what used to be the Jones Family Hotel, built in 1884. The remainder of the former hotel is now ‘Le Coq Healthy Rotisserie’ restaurant and a few small businesses. The apartments are at the rear and accessed by a small entry gate to the extreme left and barely discernible in my final picture attached.

This review focuses on the Writers Den though I have stayed in and thoroughly recommend both.

The Writers Den (and the other one is similar though slightly larger) was extremely well appointed and included free very fast wifi. The owner, Gillian, clearly has an eye for detail and we found nothing lacking. While we didn’t do any serious cooking we had breakfast in the apartment and had take-way for dinner on a couple of nights. Sometimes you just don’t want to go out and this was certainly a place where we felt comfortable spending a night in. A home away from home, if you like.


Off street, secure parking is available in the small courtyard at the rear of the apartment. This is listed as a separate cost though we managed to get it for free as our three night stay which coincided with a long weekend when on street parking in the immediate area was mostly free. Parking is tight though two large vehicles can be accommodated if both drivers park carefully.

The apartment was ideally located. While we drive to Sydney we generally do not use the car there, preferring to avail of the infinitely cheaper and more convenient public transport system. While there is a bus stop immediately outside the apartment, on Darling Street, buses from here follow a very circuitous route into the city taking the best part of an hour. About 250 metres walk from the apartment is a bus stop (Victoria Road after Darling St) on Victoria Road which services numerous buses all of which will take you into the city, at least as far as Town Hall in about 10 minutes. About half the buses from this stop continue on to Circular Quay, if that is your intended destination. We found the service to be excellent on both weekdays and weekends. You will have to get an Opal card to use Sydney’s public transport system.

I have digressed, back to the apartment or rather its location. There are a number of eateries including ‘Le Coq Healthy Rotisserie’ a higher end though not exorbitant French style restaurant which we greatly enjoyed.

Within walking distance of the apartment there are ample cafes and restaurants and, off course, the city is only ten minutes away by bus. When we arrived we had lunch at the excellent ‘Egg of the Universe’, less than five minutes walk from the apartment. I have written a separate review on this.

All in all I can highly recommend this apartment whether you have a pet/vehicle or not. I certainly plan on staying here again.

You will get a better deal on these apartments if you book directly with the owner rather than on other booking sites where it is listed. The owner is very responsive to emails and most helpful. The website below provides all necessary detail including cost and booking instructions.

I should explain that the cushions/mat on the floor and the sofa covering in the attached pictures are my attempt, as a responsible dog owner, to protect the apartment from dog hair and are not distasteful soft furnishings provided by the owner. Talking of dogs, there is a park within few minutes walk from the apartment where your dog can do its doggie do’s (though you must naturally clean up). The park itself is great for a pre-breakfast (or anytime) stroll with or without a dog.
